Studying abroad is super expensive because you have to pay 3 parties 1)Your university 2)A third party liason that is helping organize all the logistics for you 3)The local institution in the country you are going to that is hosting you This is why studying abroad through your university in Italy, England, etc. can range from $3,500 for 1 month to $15,000 for a semester. If you want to go abroad, do something meaningful, travel, AND have it look good on your resume...I suggest you do an internship abroad and not go through your university...go directly to the third party. The third party wont be charging you tuition (obviously) and it will be cheaper for you. 1 month will be closer to $1,400 and 4 months abroad can be $4,000. SO you don't have to go into debt and your experience will be the same--if not better for ! your career to do something more worthwhile. I'm also from New York and did an internship abroad and thought it was much more beneficial for me than the French Language study abroad program I did in college. Buddy Ardd: well if your college/uni has a study abroad program, then you can still earn credits while taking classes, they'll just be in the other country, but they have to be accepted by your school first. but other than the credits issue, it is pretty expensive. as far as I know, you might have to pay your own way to go and live in the other country. of course, you could try to get a scholarship too

August Hubbard: It absolutely is a realistic dream and definite! ly worth it. Depending on your school and the specific study ! abroad program and agreement with the destination institution, sometimes your financial aid will work during your study abroad experience. That is something you would really need to look into though because it varies a lot. For example, where I went to undergrad, your financial aid worked and you paid the exact same tuition if you wanted to study through the offered program in China... but you had to look for scholarships or pay from loans, out of pocket, etc. if you wanted to go to New Zealand. The school I work with now will allow you to use your finanical aid and pay the same tuition if the students study in Spain (but this option only just became available this year) but if you go anywhere else, your financial aid won't work and you need to figure it out finanically pretty much on your own (most commonly through loans).A study abroad experience is amazing and extremely beneficial! My brief time abroad was the best time of my entire life and wish I had gone with a mor! e traditional study abroad option when I was an undergrad. I was only abroad a month but I can't even begin to describe the positive impact even just that time had on me. In terms of careers later on... some hot key words in TONS of job descriptions these days include multiple variations of global experience and international education. Leisa Brodnex: In Florida, special education students at the elementary level are taught at ability levels but given standardized tests like Florida's FCAT based on grade level. Under Florida law, all students whether special ed or not are required to pass the 3rd grade reading test prior to being promoted to 4th grade. As a result many special ed students in Florida, including my son, are required to repeat 3rd grade. There are similar requirements later on in their school career. They have to pass the 8th grade tests in order to go on to high school and the 10th grade tests in order to graduate....Show more

German Thal: In North Carolina, they are allowed to repeat a grade, however, it is a decision of the IEP team. It is generally not appropriate for a mentally disabled child (low IQ) to repeat a grade, because due to the nature of their disability, repeating a grade will not help them "catch up". Some learning disabled children can benefit from repeating a! grade, especially if they are making significant progress and another year in the same grade would put them on "grade level", however, retention only works with full parental support. If a child ever feels that they are repeating a grade as punishment, his/her self-confidence is shot. In my opinion, a child should NEVER repeat more than one grade, because this separates them too far from their same aged peers. Actually, I think NCLB is causing more EC kids to be held back, because they are often not able to meet the grade level standards. I have had parent! s in elementary school that wanted to retain their son, but the admin and lead teacher gave the parents articles on what research says about retention. Also, they said that if a student is classified SPED, why would we then hold them back. Somer Distilo: I think that more than time spent helping, it's more a matter of organizing a set time and place for the child to do their homework. Homework should become such a habit that a parent will not have to insist. Doing homework is a minimal, basic requirement of being a good student and it should not be questioned at all. If the quantity becomes too much, a parent can and should address this with a teacher by giving crucial feedback about the amount of time an assignment is taking (a teacher might not know, every student is very different in this regard). As a teacher myself, I have noticed that young people succeed most with firmly estalished routines regarding 1. time and place to do work 2. maintaining their own materials 3. understanding how to use resources (computer,dictionary, you) 4. believing that it is absolutely essential to get the job done - owning the responsibility via, say, the careful maintenance of a student ! planner. A parent does not have to sit with a child each step of the way during homework sessions, but the family routine must reflect the importance of the work the child is doing. Cut the radio or television, distracting phone calls while the child is working. Offer smiles, encourgement, healthy snacks to reinforce that work is being done. Encourage your child to do both short and long-term planning. Have them be the child that asks a teacher what major project or assessment will be happening in a given evaluation period. Have them be the child that asks how they will be evaluated. Teachers are required to provide this information to their supervisors - why not to students? Most teachers will be delighted to do this. If students know what is expected for a given task, then they can gear their work towards that goal and can even ask their instructor if they are progressing well on a given assignment. As a parent, be a resource, cheerleader, side kick. Parents wh! o are involved in this way are highly effective. I cannot stress enough ! that the hardest kind of involvement might be a recognition that one's own adult pursuits must be coordinated around the growing academic concerns of the family. I'm not saying that parents cannot have a life, but I am saying that the life of the parent - if they want to help their child succeed - must be built around the needs of the child. If one parent is busy, then look for another parent, relative or community member to fill this role. Sometimes a local college student would be available to work as a homework buddy to one's child. Freely communicate with teachers - not just when things are going wrong - but with questions like, "how can we enhance what you are doing in the classroom at home?" If all of this is done in the early years, the child will know how to run their academic life on their own by middle school and may be able to self direct nicely in the high school years. In high school, parents will want to keep a watch over how much time their child sleep! s, internet and video game usage, coordination of sports, academic and social activities and the like. Parents should not be involved in the grade negotiation process which is like Monday morning quarterbacking. Students - even shy ones - need desperately to be empowered with great questions to ask their teachers and the clear belief that their teachers are there for them to provide extra help when needed. If a parent has had a negative school experience and with teachers in particular, it is essential not to communicate this negativity to the student. Branden Round: If you find a good homeschooling program, you should be fine. You will need to partner with some local schools when it comes to taking Chem lab, Bio lab ect. You will need a strong science background before going to college..something that homeschooling often does not provide. Don't go with the christian homeschooling programs.
