buying a car from adealer or from a particular?

Tory Clapper: There are no "risks" involved, its just a matter of saving money by buying it from an individual seller. It's more convenient ( and often cheaper ) to buy from an individual. The Cons about doing this is that you have to do alot of the legwork yourself by going to the DMV, etc.. to transfer the title and pay sales tax. If you don't have alot of time on your hands (like me) this can be a hassle. Also, buying from an individual you don't know what kind of shape the car is in. Sometimes private sellers can be even bigger liars than some dealerships. The Cons buying from a dealership is that right off the bat, you will have to pay for "Dealer Prep" charges ($650+) and deal with car salesmen. If you're a good negotiator and an educated consumer I would go this way. Even though nothing is written in stone, you also know that the car has at least been checked out mechanically to a certain degree. If you go to a dealership, stay away from the "Buy here pay here" p! laces. SOME can be quite shady and sneaky and particularly untrustworthy....Show more

Leticia Laiben: When shopping in that price range it is almost always best to buy from an individual. The reason you want to buy from an individual is because a car in that price range needs to be something that was well maintained. In order for you to assess if a car was well maintained is to meet the previous owner. I would also suggest doing a carfax before buying any used car.
